Haast School is a small remote Years 1 to 8 school situated on the edge of a World Heritage site at Hannah’s Clearing in South Westland at the bottom of the West Coast, South Island, New Zealand. With a roll of nine students.

We have a small dedicated staff consisting of a teaching principal, 0.8 teacher, a teacher aide/office administrator and a cleaner.
Our three classroom school includes an excellent children’s library, office block with staffroom and teaching space. A covered community swimming pool, and extensive playing areas that border native forest and the ocean. School gardens and two schoolhouses for staff.
The Haast community playgroup has shared occupancy of our third classroom that meets regularly with an active roll of six.
The majority of our parents are employed in positions with hospitality, tourism, fishing, farming and government departments.
We link to other schools in a sport/cultural cluster in South Westland, Senior Camps with Fox Glacier School, School Skiing at Cardrona and are an Enviro School.
Year 8 students go on to secondary boarding schools such as Dunstan College, Southland Boys’ or Girls’, Otago Boys’, St Hilda’s, Columba, and St Kevin’s.
